Reducing the impact of urban wet weather discharges
IMPAKT! is an international collaboration, sponsored by Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland. Partners in the project are Waterschap De Dommel (NL), the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM), Aquafin and Fluvius. The goal of the project is to define a programme of cost-effective measures for reducing the ecological and water quality impact of urban wet weather discharges.
To this end, a detailed measurement and modelling framework was set up. The study area of the project is the cross-border basin of the River Dommel, containing the Flemish subbasins of Dommel and Warmbeek, which are both high priority areas in achieving the EU's Water Framework Directive (WFD) goals. As it was not feasible to build a single fully integrated model within the scope of the project, a cascade of mainly existing models was used. The missing link in this cascade, a prediction model for CSO pollution loads (CSO generator), was developed during the project.
