Long periods of drought and heavy peak downpours will happen more and more often due to the changing climate. Containing rainwater as far as possible is an important measure to combat drying-out of the ground and flooding. Awareness of this has grown visibly in recent years. However, knowledge of what is possible is often lacking. This is considerable, even in places where, at first sight, it is difficult to achieve.

Just before the summer of 2020, Aquafin and industry association Vlario launched the website Blauwgroenvlaanderen.be with a range of measures for soaking away and buffering rainwater on public land. A filter function generates the relevant possibilities for each specific situation. Informative practical examples are designed to inspire towns, cities and municipalities to make room for water.

Since it pays to deal with rainwater smartly on a small scale too, the website also has a section with applications and tips for homes and gardens and for schoolyards.
